The Canadian Association of Research Libraries (CARL) recognized Carole Moore, Chief Librarian at the University of Toronto, as the winner of the 2008 CARL award for Distinguished Service to Research Librarianship. Ms. Moore has been a key promoter of the digital preservation and dissemination of Canadian heritage publications and other public domain materials. Through her leadership, the University of Toronto Libraries have digitized thousands of books for contribution to the Open Content Alliance and to the Internet Archives. She was also one of the originators of the ground-breaking Canadian digitization program, AlouetteCanada (now part of Canadiana.org).

A $1-million gift to York University through the York University Foundation from the family of William Pearson Scott is helping York create a new kind of library for the digital age. The gift from Michael Scott, his wife Janet and their family, matched by the University, will create the W.P. Scott Chair in E-Librarianship, tasked with researching the innovations and implications of new developments in computing and information technologies. This extends to exploring areas such as e-learning, digital collections, collaborative Web spaces, social software, and interactive and integrative online services and information.


Berkeley steps forward with bold initiative to pay authors’ open-access charges

It’s one thing to say you support open-access publishing. It’s another to provide authors with a pot of money to actually pay for it. That’s what’s happening at the University of California Berkeley. In January, the university launched the Berkeley Research Impact Initiative, a pilot program co-sponsored by the University Librarian and the Vice Chancellor for Research to cover publication charges for open-access journals.

Wikipedia, the upstart Internet encyclopedia that most universities forbid students to use, has suddenly become a teaching tool for professors. Recently, university teachers have swapped student term papers for assignments to write entries for the free online encyclopedia. Writing for Wikipedia "seems like a much larger stage, more of a challenge," than a term paper, said professor Jon Beasley-Murray, who teaches Latin American literature at the University of British Columbia in this western Canadian city.
