Goal: To offer services, information resources, and facilities of such quality as to place the UVic Libraries in the upper 20% of Canadian comprehensive university libraries.

2.1 Increase McPherson Library and Priestly Law Library regular and exam hours.
Comments - McPherson Library hours went from 90.5 to 99.5 hours a week during the Sept to April and from 77.5 hours to 83.5 hours during the summer term. Exam hours are have been increased to 110.5 from 101. This increase addresses the needs our users expressed about hours in the 2006 and 2007 LibQual+ surveys. S. Bedi

2.2 Create stronger self-help and point of need instructional presence by use of online guides and tutorials.
Comments -In 2008, this was a leading priority for the Teaching and Learning Librarian and the Library Instruction Group. Given the opportunity that the website redesign presented, instruction related content on the library’s website was significantly enhanced. In particular, self-help web resources were created for: ‘Citation Help’, which included revised guidance on common styles, anti-plagiarism tips, and how to create annotated bibliographies; eTutorials, which included new screencasts on finding articles and books: and our award nominated ‘Research Tips Central’ section. 2.3 Offer more subject, educational level, and resource-specific face-to-face library and archives instruction.
Comments -The General Instruction portfolio of the Library Instruction Group revised the format of our Nutshell Library Workshop format. Revisions included offering a broader range of workshops, establishing a consistent schedule, enhancing the promotion of these workshops, and creating a new workshop titled ‘Library Research 101’. 2.4 Integrate library research skills and information literacy curriculum components into English 135.
Comments -The Teaching and Learning Librarian worked closely with the Department of English to create a thirty page workbook for over 1800 ENGL135 students. This workbook has been well received by instructors in the Department of English and was in part created to replace the Library Test and nearly 40 individual workshops for sections of ENGL135. (P. 4 To continue to create a suitable physical environment which meets the needs of users and staff, and addresses the challenges of the Libraries’ expanding electronic services and growing collections.
4.1 Develop and implement the Mearns Centre Learning Commons and Media Commons.
Comments -The Teaching and Learning Librarian led the implementation of the Learning Commons in the spring of 2008 and the space was service ready by September 2008. The Learning Commons is a shared initiative with the following campus stakeholders: Learning Skills, Peer Helping, Math and Stats Assistance Centre, Chemistry Drop-In Centre, Physics Aid Service, The Writing Centre (The Learning and Teaching Centre), The UVic Computer Help Desk, Learning Commons Assistants and Library Technical Help, and Reference and Collections Services. The development and implementation of the Learning Commons included the following tasks: communications planning, furniture and space configuration, web space development, occupancy planning, service and emergency preparedness training, program planning, assessment planning, and solidifying a governance structure.
